Erasmus in Santander: A Nightlife Guide for International Students

· Updated

Going out on Erasmus in Santander, Spain (Cantabria): bars in Cañadío, Río de la Pila and Puertochico, clubs from midnight to 4:30–6:00, and Thursday counts as a night out. In 2026 the city was an ESN Erasmus Destination of the Year finalist.

A finalist for Erasmus Destination of the Year 2026

The Erasmus Student Network picks an Erasmus Destination of the Year by vote at its Erasmus Generation Meeting. In April 2026, in Split, the five finalists were Gothenburg, Istanbul, Munich, Santander and Turin. Turin won, but making the final five says something about how students rate the city.

How a Spanish night out works here

The timetable is later than most of Europe. Clubs in Santander open late: Pandora at 23:30, Kudéta at midnight. They close between 4:30 (Pandora, Malaspina, Samoa, Ramé) and 6:00 (Kudéta on Fridays and Saturdays, Niágara, Sala Queen). So the first hours of the night are for dinner and bars, and nobody goes into a club at 22:00. At weekends there is also the tardeo, afternoon drinks from around 16:00 to 22:00, with Plaza de Cañadío as the classic meeting point.

The areas in five minutes

  • Plaza de Cañadío: the meeting point, terraces and bars all around. Sala Niágara is just off it, on Calle San Simón.
  • Río de la Pila: alternative bars and, says the tourist office, a favourite of the younger crowd.
  • Calle del Sol: quieter bars and, with luck, live music.
  • Puertochico and Hernán Cortés: pinchos and first drinks, and Kudéta, the big weekend club.
  • Central streets: Malaspina (indie and rock disco-pub), Samoa and Ramé on Calle Moctezuma, Pandora on López Dóriga.
  • El Sardinero: beach, calmer at night; Amarras for Latin dancing.

Student events and ESN Santander

The big one at the start of the year is UC Fest, the Universidad de Cantabria welcome party. In 2026 it is on Thursday 15 October at Escenario Santander, from 13:00 to 21:00, for €3 (€6 with food), and you need your university card (TUI). ESN Santander, the local section of the Erasmus Student Network, is listed at the Casa del Estudiante on Avenida de los Castros (tower B), near the campus. Its channels are where trips and student parties get announced.

Money and ID

What a club night costs: advance tickets at Kudéta start at €10 with a drink, and some nights have a free guest list. Drinks in bars run at about €5 to €8. At the door, carry a passport or your national ID card: Cantabria's law lets the venue ask for an "equivalent document" and requires it to refuse entry to anyone who cannot prove their age. Clubs are 18+.
